【讲座摘要】:

    We all know that the neutron is one of three particles that make up the atom: a particle that is electrically neutral with the mass of a proton. Because of its mass scientists had known of its existence since the days of the very first models of the atom, but because of its electrical neutrality it was not discovered until we knew everything else about the atom. The lectures begin with an account of the history of its discovery and of the early research into the interactions of neutrons with atomic nuclei that quickly led to the development of atomic energy and the atomic bomb. In the second part we discuss a number of applications that exploit the unique properties of the neutron, including in the areas of health care, engineering, energy and materials science.


【主讲人简介】:

    Martin Dove教授,在伯明翰大学物理学获得本科和博士学位后,继续在爱丁堡和剑桥大学做博士后研究,后受聘于剑桥大学地球科学系任教职,并于2003年受聘为教授(full professor)。2011年转入伦敦女王玛丽大学,担任凝聚态物质与材料物理学中心主任。Martin Dove教授的研究方向非常广泛,主要围绕“Disordered materials and structure–property relationships”,尤其是涉及phase transitions, amorphous materials, negative thermal expansion, and radiation damage. 他的研究工作既有实验 neutron/x-ray scattering 又包括计算机仿真。他是最早将the Reverse Monte Carlo method 应用于晶体材料的散射数据分析的研究者之一,同时利用the Rigid Unit Mode model 解释network materials中的phase transitions and negative thermal expansion 。他获得过the Philips Physical Crystallography Prize (British Crystallographic Association) Alexander von Humboldt Research Award个人奖,并是Fellow of the Institute of Physics会士。
